Please, someone get that girl a pair of UNDIES. That, before
anything is what I want to say about this issue of JSA, (I am not going to write
the complete title, it is just too damn friggin’ long). The second thing I have
to say, both about the issue and the character on the cover, or rather about her
costume is…That is one UGLY piece of clothing, and this I say as someone who has
been through the brain-pain that was AzBats.
Three issues in and even though this series’ very high profile relaunch is going
along quite week, even without placing it against the par excellence crappiness
of quite a few other high profile DC relauches (with Wonder Woman and Flash
scoring as the top two, or rather bottom two), there is something about this
incarnation of the JSA that isn’t quite just sitting well with me. It is not
like that the team seems just too hokey or forced (like the latest JLA)
sometimes, after all even with the newbies, the overall dynamic of the JSA is
pretty much the same. Whatever it is, I cannot put my finger on it. Even though
every issue has its ‘exciting’ scene, overall the experience is more show and
not quite enough substance. Then again, sit it next to JLA and none of those
problems even factor, if just alone of the sheer speed at which the main plot
took off. If only Batman, Superman and Wonder Woman would have their homework on
time, they wouldn’t have to sit through the Bat-Cave DETENTION.
There’s a lot of killing (and almost killing) here. Continuing from the last
issue, the Nazis continue the massacre of the family of Commander Steel. Popping
up last time around, Hawkman continues his usual clichéd angry man
routine. As expected he saves the character who is going to be the next
Commander Steel, but not before her get set on the process of become CS. Yeah, I
was so surprised with this development that I almost batted an eye over it.
With Hawkman taking Steel-boy to the JSA HQ we learn soon enough that these (CS
and Mr.A) aren’t the only two families who have been attacked and destroyed, or
(as revealed by Sandman) who were the last ones. Someone is using the Fourth
Reich to wipe of entire bloodlines of the JSA-ers, both former and current.
Scared out of their pants, or in Cyclone’s case her Joker-esque stockings, the
team rushes out to get to their own families and others who might also be
attacked.
While all this is going on, Wildcat continues boozing with his son ending it
just in time to…, well, for that read the issue. As for Wildcat Jr. I am sure
Kingdom Come fans must’ve/would cream themselves over what happens to him,
what he turns into.
Dale Eaglesham’s artwork is as detailed as ever as is Ruy Jose’s inks and Jeremy
Cox’s colors. There are quite a few impressive ‘character shots’, especially in
the scenes with Wildcat and junior. However, at the same time there were a few
instances which felt just too ‘busy’, with the top one being the full page shot
of the unveiling of Cyclone.
Conclusion: For an ending, I’d like to do it the same way as I
began, and yes, I still think that is one damn ugly costume. RATING: 8.5/10
