Well, how do I go about reviewing this. There isn’t so much as a
‘complete’ story as there are previews. Hmm, let me try.
Martian Manhunter: Looks like J’onn Jonzz is in for a change…a major
change. Gone is the cool, stable, ‘backbone of the JLA’ J’onn. This is someone
who is looking to….umm, branch out, emotionally as well as by his actions. There
is also a hint that he might no longer be the last Martian alive
(something confirmed by the talks of the Miss Martian whatshername on the Teen
Titans). Also, it looks like (to me) that J’onn might not be on the new JLA…at
least not for sometime, and with this minis lasting 8 issues, it kind of makes
sense. Just a thought…since when did Martians start to look like the Skrull?
OMAC: If you thought we’d seen the last of Brother Eye and his minions,
you are wrong. At first glance it might seem like yet another OMAC or to be more
specific a mix b/w an OMAC and whatever was that Sasha Brodeaux was turned into.
Don’t know what tale this 8 issue long mini is going to tell but with Bruce
Jones at the helm, I can’t help but think of not even picking it up…(just on
principle) after the crap-sling-fest that he has turned Nightwing into. But at
least the art looks impressive with just the right balance of gritty.
Uncle Sam & The Freedom Fighters: Even though I dropped the ‘Battle for
Bludhaven’ mini, which in a way this mini will be a sequel of, I just might give
it a try, not because of blowhard Father time or the ‘Booster-Golded’ Ray, but
because of Uncle Sam’s entrance and more importantly of Phantom Lady and her…er,
twin-shooters. Man, they are drawn so big and so totally ‘out there’ that even
the creators of x-rated comics will be having an inferiority complex. Just see
the Playboy Bun…uh, Phantom Lady here and see the one in the latest issue of
Manhunter. Agreed they are different women and in different timelines, but
manoman….I’ll shut up now.
The Creeper: Now this six parter is a confirmed buy for me. Not only is
the story telling fast the artwork is also great. The way the clean-polished
Jack Ryder is represented only makes the dark-madness of the Creeper even
more….creepy. Now I know being in Gotham, there is more than a chance of one or
more of the Bat-boys (including the big cheese himself) showing up, but I would
like if that is kept to a minimum or ‘ideally’ zero. I want to see and read the
Creeper here, if only because of my fond memories of his appearance in BTAS (and
Justice League Unlimited #10, the comic).
The All-New Atom: The lone ‘ongoing’ of all the six, this is came across
as the least impressive of all, and unless things change in the main story, I
don’t think I’ll be picking up any after #1, which I will just buy ‘cause of
habit. The writing is so wordy it harks of Bendis, and not even the main
character or the supporting cast could capture my interest. The only redeeming
thing here, the artwork. And also, now that I have seen it in action I can
clearly say that this is one UGLY costume. What is that on his back? Atom’s
version of those Iron-Spidey arms which themselves look like cheap Halloween
ripoffs of Doc Oc’s tentacles.
Trials of Shazam: GET THIS. Ahem, now that outburst is over, I would like
to say that for anyone who liked the Day of Vengeance mini, this should be a
sure shot buy for you. Heck, I didn’t like it all that much and still I am
hooked onto this. Then again, with Judd Winnick and Howard Porter in the pilots’
(writer and artist) seat, what else do you expect. No only is the writing fast
paced (just as Winnick’s work on the ‘Outsiders’) the art also has a very mature
look.
As for the ending, the last page was indeed a surprise. Lets see how it works
out in the other titles. Conclusion: Even split. A couple
of hits, a couple of misses and two sure shot homeruns.
RATING: Well…Promising. (Can’t put a single number)
