Note: This special is set after Infinite Crisis
#6, and as such this review might contain spoilers for both this special and
that issue of IC.
Like it or not the OMAC Project miniseries was easily the most ‘hard-assed’ of
all Infinite Crisis minis….and this special just carries and builds on the
standard set by its predecessor.
The main story (and the reason for is ‘release’ delay) leading to this special
is the one started in Infinite Crisis #6. Brother Eye, the satellite originally
created by Batman to spy on the other superheroes (after the mindwipe revelation
of Identity Crisis) and given sentience by Alex Luthor was finally brought down
by the emergency team assembled under Batman. More on that in the review of
Infinite Crisis #6. What this special (and this review) deals with is the FINAL
takedown/destruction of Brother Eye after it crash lands in Northern Yemem-Southern
Saudi Arabia.
Knowing that the Eye won’t be destroyed so easily (after all he created it),
Batman asks Sasha Bordeaux, Black Knight of Checkmate, and his ex-bodyguard (and
semi-lover) to ‘do this for him’ and destroy the satellite, and more
importantly its database. This is important because, stored in those data banks
is the information of every hero and villain in the whole world.
Also as we see, there are quite a few countries who have tracked the satellite’s
crash. These countries, including the US, send their own meta and non-meta
contingents to try and gain possession of the satellite (and/or its data banks).
The American President flexes his ‘secret organization’ muscles and appoints
Amanda Waller as the new Black KING of the Checkmate organization. Without
giving out too many spoilers….Amanda shows up at Checkmate HQ and acts pretty
much as the 25% dictator, 100% bi**h that her character is. She also has with
her, Fire (Beatriz), whom she has a lot of dirt on and based on that treats her
worse than a stray dog. (If I sound a bit too hard, that’s ‘cause it is the way
the tone of the special is). Fans of Fire and her ‘light’ image will be….well,
shocked….and most probably even out off. I also didn’t like it…at all.
When her attempts to recall her ‘Black’ Knight fails, with Sasha going awol
(possibly due to the request Batman made), she sends Agent Midnight and Fire to
stop her from destroying B.E. It seems that the US govt. (or maybe just her)
have plans of repairing the satellite and sending it back into space. (And don’t
even ask…these people never learn. Not even after what President Lex
Luthor) When they arrive at the crash site they find themselves as observers as
an Uber-OMAC (created by B.E. earlier) is literally cutting and blasting through
the Chinese, Russian, Israeli secret forces.
Well, as all good things come to an end…so does the bad this time. And I don’t
need to spell out for you go guess what that means. Lets just say, when
Checkmate (the series) finally comes out, I will be sure to get it. Hope its
good, ‘cause I have some serious expectations from it.
Conclusion: I really could have done without the Fire-Waller scene.
Other than that. Best IC ‘minis’ Special’ so far.
RATING: 8.5/10 (Loses on '9'...check Conclusion)
