From the very first issue to the one before this, I have
reviewed every single of Ion and even though it wasn’t always the case, I have
tried to review each issue to the best of my ‘impartial’ mind. The problem in
that? My Mogo sized fanboyishness over Kyle Rayner.
To say that after eleven months of build up (initially slow and then picking up
speed), I was looking forward to this issue would be quite the understatement.
Nevertheless, I will say it. I was REALLY looking forward to this issue.
Well, apart from the passage included below (which I originally wrote for my
review of issue #9 of this maxi-series) and he links provided below that, all I
have left to say for this issue is, way to go DC. Just when I think that a
character cannot be skewed and screwed any further in comes something that
literally tears open the preset bounds. Way to Ron Marz (didn’t expect this from
you Ron, not with this character), way to go editor Eddie Berganza (looking
forward to your next pimping session, maybe for this character) and most of all,
way to go Mr. Dan Didio (really ‘cleaned’ up the DCU Post-IC didn’t you, can’t
wait to see who you clean next, maybe have Courtney Whitmore’s baby sister,
Patricia sexual molested).
With a plot twist that makes Paul Jenkins’ bringing back of Marvel’s Captain
Marvel seem like literary genius, the creative team behind this series and the
TPTB at DC have through yet another female body on the parody that has become
Kyle Rayner’s ‘personal’ life. Ladies and Gentlemen, Maura Rayner (Kyle’s
mother) died in Ion #12. That’s it, that’s all that happens in this issue. What
follows below is an extract from my review of #9 and the links to one of the
last happy moments (from the previous GL series) between the mother and son.
"Those who have followed Kyle’s journey down the path of the ring will know
the bond that Kyle has with his mother. As for newbies lemmie do a quick
recount. A single parent Maura Rayner raised his only son, Kyle, all on her own,
sacrificing her own happiness and wishes for his. Do note that Kyle’s parents
separated not because they did not love each other, but because they did, and
even more than each other, both Aaron and Maura loved baby Kyle even more. Maura
has seen Kyle through many upheavals in his life, including the death of his
girlfriend Alex (killed by Major Force), his breakup with Donna Troy, his first
stint as Ion (with the near omnipotent power levels), Jade’s betrayal and the
subsequent breakup, and even Kyle’s decision to leave Earth for Oa. In many
ways, Kyle Rayner is a mamma’s boy, something he is more than accepting and
proud of, (even if, in his view, mama sometimes worries too much.)
After hearing from Guy Gardener about something being wrong with his mother
(last issue), Kyle rushes to Earth to find her admitted in a hospital. On
inquiring, the doctor tells him that no matter what tests they do; even he
cannot explain what ails Mrs. Rayner. Distraught as well as angry with himself
(for not taking better care of his mother), Kyle is not at all happy with an
untimely beckon by the Guardians. Waking up during his conversation with one of
the Guardians (well, his floating head), Maura tells Kyle that he should go
fulfill his duty. However, before he leaves she does ask him to show her his new
costume. For a reader of the previous Green Lantern series, this scene struck a
chord in me, reminding me a scene when standing in her kitchen Maura fawned on
her son ‘the Green Lantern’, and his ‘costume’, only to corrected by Kyle that
it wasn’t a costume but a uniform. In a very draining last arc of that series,
this scene was possibly the only light moment."
