The last issue of this mini and even though it didn’t end on the
same high note as it has begun, (primarily due to the change in art mid-run),
The Creeper, the first of the BNW minis to reach its end, has a ‘hopeful’
closer.
While the first half is mainly the continuation and culmination of the fight
scene from the last issue, the one between all those ‘Creepers’, the second
deals with wrapping up loose ends like the whereabouts of the Joker and Dr. Yatz,
the Bat-involvement, the matter of the ‘Creeper’ cells within Jack Ryder, and to
an extent, the dynamic between Jack and his ex-flame Vera. Although there isn’t
most probably going to be a Creeper ongoing anytime soon (especially not after
the bombing on almost all new Post-OYL ongoings), writer Steve Niles has
provided with an ideal kicking off point for any future sequel.
As for the artwork, seeing Justiniano return for the last issue only makes his
absence in the previous two issues all the more glaring. Nothing against fill-in
artist Steve Scott but after the visual stage set by the J-man gave in the first
three issues; any change would have garnered a similar reaction. I still cannot
for the life of me understand as to what was so pressing that DC couldn’t keep
the artist count to one for just six issues.
Conclusion: Even though this mini might have rubbed some Creeper
veterans the wrong way, as a reader/viewer whose main exposure to this character
came from the DCAU (BTAS, etc), I for one enjoyed it…art screw ups
notwithstanding. RATING: 7.5/10
