The Birds, although a good enough series has never been quite
there as far my reading interest is concerned. To me it/they just came across as
more a independent agents/heroes working their own stuff but with the advantage
of having an information broker (the Oracle) to fall back on. Well, with the
last few issues and more importantly the advent of OYL, that particular point
seems to have been dealt with. Sadly, it still seems kind of forced and flighty
to me.
From the looks of it, it seems that we begin in Gotham City, complete with
Killer Croc, Clayface (don’t know which one) and the Ventriloquist stepping in
for the Society (of Villains) and the Huntress and the Jade Canary (not
revealing truth about the character) representing the Birds, with the Oracle
present…as always. Truth-be-told, the Jade Canary bit did catch me off guard. I
had some guesses for the identity of this character, and although I did get
close (in relation), I really did not see this coming. From the looks of it, it
isn’t going to last long.
As for the second plot, Black Canary seems to be on a quest of her own, and
although I am sure it will be revealed in the future issues, I could have done
without (once again) using Canary to fill the pages with her oft seen and
getting-repetitive hand-to-hand fight with Asian fighters. She gets there, she
meets the people, she fights, she loses, gets dumped in a hut unconscious….I
read this in at least two plot arcs…right down to the ‘moves’.
Conclusion: Of all the OYL issues till date (and I didn’t read
Aquaman OYL), this one came across as the weakest of all.
