I understand that this series (as with Batman Confidential) is
supposed do what ‘Legends of the Dark Knight’ has done for the Bat-mythos, that
is build on the character and in many cases provide ‘fodder’ for other ‘in main
continuity’ stories. What that means is although these stories are to be (almost
always) just with and about the main character, in this case Superman/Clark
Kent, the events and stories here might end up being used/placed in stories in
Superman, Action Comics or any other Super-title/story.
That said, just two issues in Superman Confidential is already losing me.
Decompression I accept (in this case), but decompressed story telling does not
always necessitate slow story telling and that is what this issue is. Lois,
following up from Perry’s idea/orders calls and fixes a meeting with Gallo (the
casino owner). Supes, gets caught up in a volcano and is unable to get to his
date with Lois. Lois, tired of waiting calls up Gallo and bumps up her
visit-turned-semi-date. The issue ends with her being dropped off back at her
apartment building, and Supes floating before her looking like an A-grade chump.
In short, a slightly ‘moved around’ retelling of a told-to-death Supes-Lois
tale. For an older (and in many cases funnier) take on this, I suggest picking
up on issues of titles like Superman Family or Superman’s Girlfriend Lois Lane
i.e. stories set in DC’s first Silver Age. First because, as it stands now, Dan
Didio and his pals (read: those who grew up on Silver Age versions of DC
characters) are bringing forth, nah, shoving the second Silver Age down
the readers’ throats…or at least trying to.
There is also a small bit about Clark visiting the farm, both to get a new
costume and for much needed (and rightly provided) parental advice. IMO, best
part of the issue. Conclusion: Haven’t read
BM:Confidential as yet but do hope that it works out better than this one (with
that it is more important ‘cause it has to fill the shoes of LotDK and what big
shoes those are). Will give this title a few more issues and hope that it picks
up speed.
