Ooh, look at us, just look please. We’ve had so many members
over the last twelve months. Just look at them. Just see how they talk,
their powers, their…just, uh, well, that’s about all that this issues has.
Starting with the last one, I understand this arc is about the various Teen
Titans in the year that Cyborg was out of commission, but really are we
going to have sit through issues just like this one? Issues where the
‘Squabbling Five’ (my new name for this bunch) hop from place to place,
tracking down these newbies, all in search of the elusive Raven.
Zatara (Zatanna’s cousin), Miss Martian (M’gann M’orzz or Megan Morse) and
Bombshell (a female version of Captain Atom), are the three ‘Passing Titans’
who show up here. Really DC, is this all what is ‘new’ in this NEW Earth,
duplicates (or even Triplicates) of existing characters? Big whoop on the
Crisis wave and its ability to give an easy out for writers (those looking
to write about existing characters but without actually having to do so).
You want the Martian Manhunter but do not want to keep a track of his past
and beliefs? No problem. Here, take this redhead chick version of him. Want
to shy away from Zatanna and her ‘totally unquestionable’ ethics on
mind-rap*ng teammates, yet have a hankering for backwards written words? Why
sir, step this way and have a look at her cousin who just happened to get
his powers during the Crisis and its aftermath.
As for the underlying plot here, neither Raven nor anything directly related
to her makes any actual appearance here. Oh, we get to see who all she has
visited recently, including Zatara’s crush on her (wonder what Beast Boy
would have said to that), we even get to see n’ read that all her running
about was to get to know the identity of the ‘traitor’ in the Titans. If
that isn’t enough to whet your palette, how about an accusation (or
depending how you take it, a revelation) about that traitor being the
oh-so-obvious Ravager or even Miss Martian, who isn’t all that she appears
or speaks to be.
In truth, it is only this plotline that has me interested here. As things
are at present, the Titans, both current and the past ones, I could care
less about…all except Cyborg. Even Robin, who I am liking in his own title
and in the Bat-twins (Batman and ‘Tec), is just too dreary to warrant a
second look. Conclusion: Next month even more
duplicitous Teen Titan-ing, and as I expect, even more of Wonder Girl and
Ravager’s ‘I am the Uber bit*ch here’ routine, complete with silent
solitary shots of Kid Devil (all to remind the reader that he too has a big
secret). RATING: 7.5/10
