Please note that this mini carries
a mature rating. After a blast of a mini from earlier in the
year, Bomb Queen returns once again, with a second mini one with a longer name
(‘Queen of Hearts’) and a slight change in the creative team. While in the first
one, Angel Marin was in charge of the colors, this time around that section too
it is writer and penciller-inker Jimmie Robinson who is handling it. What
difference that makes? Well, while the story and writing is the same, as is the
general artwork, the colors are brighter than and not quite as deep as the first
mini. It almost looks as if one is seeing them with a large bulb just a couple
of feet from the pages.
Moving on with the story, as with the previous mini, the first of this one too
sees the introduction of a new character, James Barry. Unlike the political mood
of before, this time around the story is much more personal (for the Queen) and
it in that where James fits or rather makes his play. He woos the queen and with
a not so subtle train-tunnel, hot-dogs and screw-n’-wood montage, we see all
that courting reach fruition. In between, we also get a short flashback to the
days when the BQ was just a Queen and not THE Queen.
What is Barry’s angle is a secret, at least for now. However, if Ashe’s (BQ’s
pet cat) distrust of him and his last page actions towards the kitty are
anything to go by, Ol’ Barry's intentions are not all honorable…or favorable
(towards BQ).
Anyone who’s read or even seen the first BQ mini would or rather should know
what they are getting into here. From the dialogues to the costumes (or in
certain cases, the lack of them) to the gratuitous skin-shots, this book isn’t
for everyone. I had said the same thing about Wildstorm’s ‘The Boys’ (Ennis) and
though both books are parodies on the ‘Superhero’ genre, and though both have
strong graphic plot and art, they are poles opposite in their actual story.
Still, just as there are readers who are enjoying ‘The Boys’, there will be
others who will equally enjoy ‘Bomb Queen II: Queen of Hearts’.
Conclusion: Not as much a ‘Kick in the *****’ as the first issues
of the first mini, nonetheless, an enjoyable ‘Time Pass’ read. RATING:
8/10
