Hmm…well…lets see… I expected more. Yup, that’s about right.
Even though this was just a one-shot deal, I was really forward to at least a
little more in terms of…well, in terms of everything, story, action, dialogues,
the whole she-bang, (and not that William Hung, Ricky Martin she-bangs). And
before going any further, let me clarify that it wasn’t from the gratuitous
cover (how about DC do one for say, PowerGirl and…umm, Talia? Nah, don’t want
that. After all, its not like we know how Kryptonian physiology will react
against Terran STDs). What had got my hopes up was the recently ended Bomb Queen
mini. Man, was that a kickass tale of what.
Anyways, although I know about Bomb Queen (from the mini), the other half here,
as in Blacklight, that character is one I have (maybe) only read about in
passing. But those who have read the BQ mini will know that in a story with the
‘Queen, it is not so much as the actual plot (which the mini had), or the fight
scenes and explosions (come on, the name is explosive enough), but also the
whole visual and dialogue experience. And while the visual part was okay enough,
it wasn’t as great as Jimmie (Robinson’s) work on BQ.
As was the case with the art, same was the case with dialogues. Oh, the usual
double entendres were there but maybe it was Geek-light…sorry, Blacklight’s
naiveté which didn’t work with BQ’s worldliness. It was the case in their
civilian interactions, with BQ in Vegas for a gun-show (for some ‘free’
shopping) and Lina (BL) there for a comic-con/fest/whatever, and even more
than that their ‘costumed’ quipping didn’t quite hit the mark. Oh, there were
instances when it did, but more often that not, it did not.
What could be the cause of all this, well, except my seemingly lofty
expectations? I can think of one other reason. Unlike the BQ mini, this one-shot
does not sport a ‘mature’ rating, so right there you can slash the fun by at
least 50%...if not more. Conclusion: $4.15 Cdn.
Don’t know if I’d pay that much for this…oh, wait. I already did. Well, what can
I say, at least I got the cover and that (Bomb Queen ‘Queen of Hearts’) pic
towards the end. RATING: 6/10 (maybe 6.5)
