This month we finally have the confrontation that has been
months in the making, and unlike Marvel’s weekly cawing, this issue’s fight has
really been in the works ever since the She-Dragon one-shot special from
July 2006.
Having tracked down Dragon and his family, or rather how his family stands now
(with his wife Jennifer still missing and this earth/dimension’s Angel having
left with Mr. Glum), the ‘evil’ Dragon and Battleaxe follow the group, attacking
only when the time is right, meaning when there are separated enough and at ease
i.e. sleeping. In the meantime, they have the expected bickering, with the
hotheaded Battleaxe ready to attack at first sight and Evil Dragon having to
calm her down, or as it turns out, keep her down by force. Not only that, they
even ‘utilize’ their free time by getting some bad-guy nookie.
When the attack finally does take place, it seems that the villains might
win…almost. With the initial element of surprise fading quickly, the heroes go
punch for punch with the baddies, with the clincher coming in form of Angel who
thanks to the onset of puberty seems to have manifested her powers, powers which
seem to be similar to her mother.
There are also the continuing plotlines of the returned Solar Man and his
antics, as also the media song and dance rising from Glum’s residence in the
Dragon household. As if the allegations of helping Glum weren’t enough, Dragon
now has every single of his past villain fight dragged out and reexamined.
The artwork is in the same vein as the past issues and even though it might be
as ‘heavy’ as many other titles (including Image’s own), Savage Dragon’s artwork
continues to be one of the liveliest, whether it be in the fights or just the
character interaction scenes.
There is also a back-story about Alex’s tracking down this world’s Star (Chris
Robinson). Having had a relationship with her world’s Star, Alex is surprised
and more than a little disheartened to hear that not only has this Chris given
up on being Star, not only has he a wife/girl friend and children, he has never
even met her, or rather the Alex of this world. Conclusion:
As with Dragon’s reply to Alex’s question at the end of the issue, I too don’t
think that the story (of Evil Dragon and Battleaxe) is over yet. In fact, this
is just the beginning. RATING:
7.5/10
