This issue of Sabrina: The Teenage Witch
was a funny one. Even though still being at my second read of the series I
didn't get all the references, I at least got the ones pertaining to the
previous (first) issue I read, #78.
As for the story here, it one of those crazy teacher-lost students types.
As Sabrina gets a new magic teacher. As to why she needed a
new one in the first place, is attributed to the last few issues (post-#78 and
pre-this one). Sabrina has withdrawn from magic school and given her 'special
abilities' her aunts decide that it would be better if she is trained by a
private tutor (and more importantly away from the eyes and control of the magic
council).
After the initial 'serious' setup and barring a couple of close call incidents
with both her magical and mortal friends (and classmates) Sabrina spends the
rest of the issue meeting and getting to know her new tutor. Drawing inspiration
from the legendary Mr. Miyagi, the character of Bartholomew is a short, long
haired, long beard & moustached forgetful living in a magical forest recluse
wizard. He is clearly the star of the issue for me, a character that I hope to
see more of in the future issues.
The art of this issue (and series) is done in a semi-manga style, which means
although it has (almost all) the characters not quite
looking their ages and having eyes a little too big for their faces, it doesn't
have the saucer on a stick bodies or for that matter, the crazy, over-the-top
hair styles. Reminding of the animation style of the
Teen Titans cartoon series, I'd give the artwork here a thumbs up.
Conclusion: Nice timepasss, continuity references not
withstanding.
