Another month, another One-Shot special from the LD-people (Lady
Death) over at Avatar. There is nothing new about this genre (and as far as
Avatar/Chaos is concerned, it might as well be a genre). After all, seeing as
these characters exist in the same universe and timeline, they are bound to run
in. However, unlike many before and definitely after it, this special has one
dubious standing. Of all the crossovers, Lady Death vs. War Angel is
possibly the lowest scorer in the ‘makes sense’ or rather the highest in the
‘what the f**k’ rankings.
Take one hottie (Lady Death) and another hottie (War Angel). Have them both meet
by some means or the other, and then have them put on a show i.e. fight while
looking hot. In addition, just got good measure, throw in another hottie, played
here by Pandora and voila, we have a story…and that in abridged form is what
Lady Death vs. War Angel is all about.
There is nothing wrong about this premise and told properly it would work. Only,
in this case, neither is the story…well, there isn’t much of a story. In
reality, a sort of epilogue to the Lady Death: Lost Souls mini (a
crossover between Lady Death, War Angel, Pandora and Unholy), this special sets
out to tie up whatever loose ends might be left after the end of that story. (I
don’t know what happened ‘cause I didn’t get the complete set, and am not even
sure if issue #2 came out). As it stands, War Angel…underwent some changes in
Lost Souls, for which she blames Lady Death, and it is for reparations for
those changes that she shows up to kill Lady Death.
As with the story, the art isn’t anything to write home about. Nowhere
comparable to the level of the art in the Lost Souls (Richard Ortiz)
crossover, it isn’t even to the same level as Lady Death: Blacklands (also by
Gabriel Guzman and Andrew Dalhouse). Although the general ambience is there, it
is in the details that it falls short, especially the facial expression. Also,
what happened to Pandora’s hair? She is supposed to created by the gods and thus
very beautiful…always. Did something happen to her in Lost Souls or did
she offend her hair styler, ‘cause that is one fugly cut.
Conclusion: Like I said, as an epilogue to Lost Souls, this
special works. Just. However, for anything more than that, especially, a proper
show down between Lady Death and War Angel, it doesn’t even start, let alone
come close to achieving that target. RATING: 5.5/10
