Red Sonja #42
Reviewed by: Bruce Logan

“This is going to cost. A lot.” Reading this issue, as well as few of the past ones had this thought going through my mind. Why? For the simple reason that I am starting to think of getting the past issues (in trade-paperback format mind you) of not only this series but possibly of other stories starring this red-haired chain-bikini clad warrior.

Let me explain a bit. I am not all that a new Red Sonja reader. I have a few issues of this series (i.e. the Pre-death ones). However, apart from the odd story or two I never quite felt the grab to pull it on a regular basis. Sure the art was nice and all as was the writing but it wasn’t just appealing enough to me.

All that has changed now.

Starting with the death issue I have not only been reading Red Sonja on a regular basis (every issue) I have been really enjoying it. Maybe it is that instead of feeling like a Johnny come lately to the party I have seen/read this ‘life’ of Red from the get go. Whatever the reason not only am I contemplating catching up on the issues that I missed the first time around I have also started reading the anthology Savage Tales, (also starring, amongst others, Red Sonja).

Anyways, my (possible) financial woes aside, this issue starts a new chapter in the ongoing journey of the ‘new’ Red Sonja. As such most of it is devoted to setting up the ground work for the main story. That doesn’t mean that it is a “talkie” issue. There is a fight scene, which, given that all the people involved are young hawt beauties is just a bit too T&A. Now I am as big a T&A fan as the next guy but come on, there is bound to be at least one “not super-model” fightin’ lady in there.

Speaking of the art, overt T&A notwithstanding it is pretty good.

Conclusion: Looking forward to the next issue.

RATING: 7.5/10
