EXCLAMATION: “Oh gawd, not
another (Origin) reveal!”
EXPLANATION: Am not going to go into
details, (can’t without not going too much back to the
previous volumes), but this issue brings forth more
events from the previous Ant stories and casts
them in a new light. In short, this is another ‘Origin’
twist to an already convoluted story.
EXAMINATION (Story): Given last year’s
notoriety it was but expected that Ant would
be leaving Image for a new, less-censored home. It seems
Big City Comics is just that place. Not only is
the language more, well, unleashed, so is the art. Nice
pun of a name creator/writer chose for this third volume
of the Ant series.
Anyways, story-wise, I seriously hope that this new
twist (of her origin) is the last/real one that Ant
gets. Even though he’s referring quite a few events from
the first two volumes of the series, the explanation
that Mario gives here does take a while to sink in. I
have been a regular/dedicated reader of this character
since she was first introduced under the Arcana banner.
Heck, even now I am getting its spin-off, Omega One,
(also published by Big City Comics). Still, all
these twists, turns, false starts and stops about who
and/or what Ant really is, it’s getting rather boring
now. As I mentioned in my reviews of the previous series
I welcomed the final explanation that was given about
this subject. It answered quite a few questions about
the character and paved the way for her to get on with
the rest of her life. Well, imagine my surprise at
picking up this new series and finding that most (if not
all) of those questions were back. Ant, rather, Hannah
Washington is back in the dumps and is just as confused
about her past as she was before. The only difference
now is that the readers can get to read her
thoughts/dialogues with the expletives that one would
expect to be used in such a situation. That and getting
quite a few of her in the nude. I don’t have anything
against the nudity (as some readers might), and feel
that this volume more than the last one has the same
style and tone as of the first volume. Nevertheless, I
can’t help but feel a (forced) try at giving this series
a much more street (grim) tone as against the
flamboyance one sees in the ‘superhero/costumed’ comics
genre.
Still, given the ‘dedication’ at the start of the issue
I hope this ‘New’ Origin is in fact the real one and
isn’t just another sham.
EXAMINATION (Art): Maybe it’s just because
it was a while since the previous volume ended and this
one begun, or maybe it’s the inclusion of events/pages
from the first volume, I find the artwork here more in
line with the first volume. The second volume (under
Image) always seemed a bit off in terms of its art.
It’s good to see Mario returning back to form. That
said, I still stand by my suggestion of a dedicated
inker. The inked finishes are still a bit rough around
the edges.
PROCLAMATION: I sincerely hope that the
story of Hannah’s life (both as and before Ant),
moves forward for her. I am definitely not in the mood
for another ‘new’ take to pop up a few months down the
line.
