Danger Girl Lite, Brit-Edition. As easy a
way I have of describing not only this new series but also the
characters appearing in it. A roughly five member team,
consisting of four beauties and one dick, and out of the four
beauties one is the new outsider…stop me if you’ve heard this
before. I for one have, in the aforementioned Danger Girl
series from Wildstorm Productions.
Set across the pond (that’s the Atlantic Ocean for the
uninitiated), in the UofK i.e. Great Britain, this first issue
of this series introduces us to the characters, both good and
bad. However, even after two reads I couldn’t care less about
any one of them and don’t even remember their names, except for
that of the big-bad, Lord Mann. The action scenes are tacky and
although executed acceptably come across as rather forced. That
goes double for the overly teenage-y behavior from the four main
female protagonists and twice that (i.e. quadrupled) for the
unfunny attempts at humor. Forget them being secret agents,
these bunch of giggle-bags couldn’t save a damned cat from a
tree, not even if their lives depended on it.
The artwork is the best thing about VSS: Nemesis Rising #1,
which isn’t saying a lot. Nevertheless, even though on quite a
few occasions things tended to get out of hand, both with the
pencils and the colors, on the whole the artwork here is clearly
deserving of a much better story.
Conclusion: As much as I want to like and give a
positive mark to the Indies (after all, I personally don’t have
the balls to make such a venture), I can’t help but give VSS:
Nemesis Rising #1 a resounding thumbs down.
