John Woo's 7 Brothers #5
Reviewed by: Bruce Logan

The final installment of this issue miniseries, 7 Brothers #5 has all the elements of a summer blockbuster movie going for it and even though there were a couple of hitches, as a whole it manages to live up to the ‘hype’ or in this case the buildup.

The Son of Hell has not only managed to get the control stones in place he has also powered them up and is using himself as a conduit for all power. So, what does this mean for our eight (the 7 brothers plus their 1 sister)? Are they done for? Out of their league (even more so than they were against the assassin Zheng)? Well, yes and no. Yes being that even pooling their power against him, at least directly, the eight of them are in no position to even pose a respectable threat, let alone beat the Son of Hell. Then again, no one said anything about splitting up with each group taking care of a certain aspect in the plan to stop and bring down Big Bad, with the emphasis on BIG. And that is exactly what they do. Still, they don’t quite measure up in the ‘physical’ levels, well until one of them, the underdog, comes up with an ace that not even the Son of Hell would have thought of.

The artwork here is no different than any of the previous issues in the sense that is matches the grim and gritty mood of the brothers as well as their surroundings. That said, the same grittiness though perfect for the brothers doesn’t quite do well with the big fight scenes. It comes off as a tad too much on the darker side.

Conclusion: Although the ending feels rushed, especially compared to the buildup it was given, as a TPB read John Woo’s 7 Brothers should make for an entertaining read.
