Ultimate Extinction #5, the fifth and final chapter of the third
part of the tale of the Gah-Lak-Tus, the ultimate version of Mr. Uber-Pinky,
Galactus is now out and I for one am not at all sad to see it end. In fact, if
anything I am still as confused as I was at the end of the first or even the
second parts (Ultimate Nightmare, Ultimate Secret).
There was everything here (as in them), the big name writer and creative team,
the Ultimate Marvel universe’s who’s who, the new hot guy (Silver Surfer), the
new super-hot n’ busty chick (Vision), the Hot-Bi*ch (Misty Knight), a different
take on an old character (once again Vision), the obligatory T&As and last but
not the least, so many clones than only George Lucas would be guy to put them in
a movie. And even after all this, even after all he shebang, the whole thing and
the supposed threat that the Gah-Lak-Tus entity posed to the earth, it didn’t
seem all that….well, threatening.
There is a lot of fighting going on here, all of it in and around Triskelion,
and all the parties involved, with the exceptions of the brainy-types (Xavier,
Jean, Vision, Reed and Sue), and ‘only here for barking orders and preening’
Nick Fury, are busy in taking down the army of bald but still ‘well endowed’
clones. And as far as fights go, this is all there it is.
Regarding Gah-Lak-Tus, to me it the Ultimate version of Galactus seemed eerily
like a black and pink/purple version of the BORG (refer to your nearest Star
Trek junkie for more info on that) It could be just me, but I was really looking
forward to an actual ‘clear’ look at something imposing and not just a ‘Saturn’
style ring forming around Earth.
As for what took care of it, in simple words it was…..hmmm, a jump started ‘Big
Bang’ cannon. Was this what had got Sue so riled up? Once again, the final
revelations paled in front of the expectations that whole build up had raised.
And that, takes us back to what I stated before i.e. I was left confused…looking
for something more in this story.
And, can Fury be depicted as even more of a blowhard after this.
I don't any will be able to surpass it anytime soon.
Conclusion: Extinction is averted….with a whimper.
