There aren’t very many stories of the childhood of our favourite
super-healing claw-wielding mutant. Even less so are the ones of a happy time
during that childhood. This story is exactly something like that and it is
because of that exact reason that I picked up, even though I am not particularly
knowledgeable or interested in the Power Pack quarter. Sure their stories
(still) have a lightness that is practically non-existent in current time/day
Marvel but somehow it hasn’t grabbed me…ever.
Anyways, about the story – contrary to what the cover suggested we don’t get to
see Wolverine in a late 19th century three-piece suit and top hat. We
do however get to see his father in a much expensive/better take on the design.
As for Logan, a.k.a. James he is a little too young (at the time) to have such
an attire. He is however, appropriately attired in shorts/knickers…appropriately
for his age that is.
Just where the Power Pack comes in, thanks to the ever-enterprising Jack Power
and his pal Franklin Richards they land up in the same time-period New York.
Coincidently the same day young James is in the city accompanying his father who
is there on some business. Jack and Franklin help the young boy whose innocent
naiveté and slim diminutive make him prime bully target.
The rest of the Power kids with H.E.R.B.I.E. in tow make the trip too and in
turn end up having to stage a rescue of sorts for the three boys. It is
H.E.R.B.I.E. who recognizes the boy who will be the Wolverine, (thanks to
genetic matching). Suffice to say on being apprised of the same (in present
time) the kids have a simple response, “No. Way.”
The artwork is clean and lively, standard kid story fare. My favourite part is
the cover.
Conclusion: This was my first “Hero-Y meets the Power Pack” story and
even though I am not going to add such minis to my regular list I will be
checking out the next issue of this mini and possibly even the first two issues.
