First things first. What exactly is Storm doing on this title?
Well, that is apart from just being eye-candy (with big boobies). Does
she have an actual purpose on this team? I mean, Cap and IronMan are the
leaders. Cap takes care of the fighting half, and IronMan the talking half.
Spidey n’ Wolvie are there to pull in the kiddies and to provide the comedic
moments. The Hulk, as with any other place he shows up, is the heavy HEAVY
HEAVVVVYY hitter. Even Giant Girl seems to make her point by taking care of the
big-nasties. All of them manage to make a point for themselves. All except Storm
that is. Is the only reason Marvel dumped her here is for the obligatory hottie,
and to avoid using the much easier to choose Ms. Marvel. Granted, being a kiddy
book, Carol’s costume would be…uh, too mature, but I am sure even she would be
able to do what Storm does here, just fly around looking pretty and get a total
of four dialogues in the whole issue, and that is with one of them being
‘Avengers Assemble’. She has (well, 'had' in mainline Marvel) the
capacity to be the Wonder Woman of the Marvel Universes. That she be reduced to
be just a position filler, well....why not just use Spiderwoman instead.
As for the story-plot, it was surprisingly interesting and funny….especially
when compared against last month’s Ultron. Starting with ‘It came from the Deep’
style attack by super-sized ocean creatures, we soon make a move to the
villain’s submarine. It is revealed that everything that has been going on, it’s
the Leader’s doing, all in his effort to do something involving the Hulk and the
Abomination. Whether he’s truly doing it for them or for himself, is never
shown, because it never comes to fruition. Instead we have a Hulk-sized
showdown, complete with a Bond-villain style secret island lair.
The funny moments, courtesy of Spider-Man, Wolverine and even the Hulk come
across as clean and truly funny. Seeing Wolverine here kind of reminded me of
Astonishing X-Men #15 (also out this week). Its nice to see that there are comic
writers who can still do funny, and not just resort to shock-value or
tearjerkers or (worst of all) ret-cons to tell their story.
Conclusion: Light, simple yet fast
paced story. Though aimed towards a younger demographic, it is a
nice time for even old farts (like me).
