This series does not having anything to do with the
mainline happenings of the Marvel Universe and is not even set in the same time,
with Ol’ Petey Parker still in high school, hence does not figure prominently in
my ‘reading’ radar. Even the issues are sort of a hit or miss, and while the
last issue was a major ‘miss’, this one was an equally impressive hit (if not
more).
May Parker is one of my favorite ‘non-hero’ characters, in the league of Alfred
Pennyworth (Batman). I always enjoy reading a good May-Peter story, and this was
one of them. It reminded me the dynamic that the two share in the Ultimate
Universe. In fact, with just a couple of changes, this story would have worked
as a great introduction for the Ultimate version of the Chameleon, the villain
of this issue. The only thing that I liked better than the ‘real’ May-Peter
interaction was the one between the ‘Chameleon’ May and Peter/Spidey.
There isn’t much in the form of a story, but instead of taking anything away
from the reading (enjoying) experience, it adds to it. Suffice to say it is a
case of ‘seeing double’ (phrase from the issue) for the flustered, cornered and
‘perennially’ on the run web-crawler. At no point, not even in the school
scenes, does the writer (Zeb Wells) let up on the pace, and even though Patrick
Scherberger does tend to ‘point’ his chins quite a bit, it is nevertheless clear
and complementary to the story writing, as is Guru eFX’s colors. I especially
liked his matching (consciously or subconsciously) of the eye-colors for the
Mays (blue and purple).
Maybe there could have been things that could have been done differently to make
this better….but not as far as I am concerned.
Conclusion: Thoroughly enjoyable. A keeper.
