So...Ultimates Annual #2…
…
…
Well, for one, this annual has come out two issues too soon, as in the
‘timeline’ in which it falls is set after not only Ultimates 2 #12 but also #13.
Meaning, an epilogue even before you’ve finished reading the story.
Still, seeing as it is Annual and has to follow a ‘release schedule’ (especially
in following the example set by the ‘always on time’ Ultimate series), lets
start with a list of the Ultimates showing up here, and where they are exactly.
First in line, as shown on the cover is Steve Rogers (Captain America). He is
followed by…wait a second let me check, just in case I missed it in the first
read.
Yup, I was right I guess. Other than Chappy-Cappy none of the other chumps…ahem,
Ultimates appear here. Heck, not even Eye-Patch Fury. Talk about a team book.
As for the story, there we have two…sort of. The two halves, one set in WW II
times and the other in the present are tied at either ends by two characters,
one being Cappy himself, and the other, a Nazi scientist by the name Arnim Zola.
About Arnim, in true mad-scientist fashion he dies (indirectly at CA’s hands and
directly by one of his own creations) only to come back…or rather brought back,
as of all things, an AI. How? Well, its all ‘em f-ers in the army and
government. Blame them. Flogged to the marrow plot twists anyone?
The whole tone and mood of this book made me go back and check both the first
Ultimates Annual as the recent issues of Ultimates 2 (for the writer). If you
thought that Mark Miller’s writing gave a middle finger to the US government and
military, Charlie Huston’s just makes a fist and shoves it up there…and all
without any lube.
Conclusion: I suggest that after reading this
issue the reader relax himself with something relaxing. E.g. War and Peace, the
Complete Works of William Shakespeare, the Constitution of your country (along
with half dozen others)…all in one sitting.
