I can’t believe I am saying this (not after
the previous writer's run) but..."I am going to miss this
series."
Although this issue is solicited as the final issue of the
series this third and final tie-in isn’t quite the end, not
just yet. That That honour(?) is to go to the Ultimate
X-Men: Requiem one-shot. In fact apart from closing the
book at a ‘special’ number there is nothing here that stands
out as being a door closer on this group of mutants. Okay,
apart from Ultimate Xavier’s biting the dust that is. In
that sense this issue is more like the second last issue,
with even the ending of the Ultimatum tie-in being not quite
an ending.
This issue main focus is the X-Men tracking down and doing
their best to stop Magneto’s biggest (far-reaching) WMD,
Jaime Madrox a.k.a. the Multiple Man. Utilizing what is
essentially a never ending labour pool Magneto’s use of
Madrox here is quite ingenious and as shown here –
explosively lethal. Add to this the ‘control’ exercised over
it and its all the more clearer that Ol’ Bucket-Head has had
this plan in the works for a long time now.
As my first Ultimate X-Men read in almost a dozen and
a half issues, (I gave up in the early-80s after have my
fill of the regurgitated garbage Robert Kirkman was slinging
at the readers), this was a rather enjoyable read. Fairly
tight knit story, above average dialogue and spiffy artwork,
all ‘round fun. Even though I haven’t been keeping up with
the goings on in the rest of the Ultimate Universe, except
for Ultimate Spider-Man, but then that title exists in its
own pocket universe. I didn’t feel confused or lost.
Speaking of the artwork, Mark Brooks’ artwork was as awesome
as always. As a fan of his art, I welcome any and every
chance to get more of his artistic brilliance. Ditto for the
cover by Ed McGuiness.
Conclusion: Ignore Kirkman’s torture of a run
and Ultimate X-Men has been a rather enjoyable
series. Here’s looking forward to the (characters’) return
Post-Ultimatum.
