Angel - After the Fall #1: After Buffy, it is the
turn of (comic) Angel to get the ‘official’ Whedon treatment and if this first
issue is anything to go by, this too (like Buffy) is going to be one hell of a
ride. All this I say without even taking into consideration the explosive last
page reveal. From Angel to Wolfram & Hart to Conner, (almost) all major Angel
series characters get to have their time in the limelight. Sure, they don’t have
Spike, but as with Buffy here too I feel this is being done to keep the
possibility of a Spike series open. As for the story, well, Los Angeles has gone
to hell…literally. Not only have the demon-types moved above ground (and/or into
their realm) they have also usurped the traditional ‘human’ mobsters becoming
area lords themselves. Angel is still alive, as much as a vampire can be, as are
Gunn, Conner, Wesley and others, a couple of them ‘in a fashion’. The artwork as
with the story is in a more serious/mature light than Buffy (Season Eight)
series. I rather liked it.
Conclusion: I am so getting this series.
RATING: 4/5
Atomic Robo #2: Atomic Robo
arrives to the present day, and even though a sizable part of
the issue is still based more than half a century in the past
even his adventures make the time jump. What this means even
though we see flashbacks of AR battling Japanese jets in 1940 we
also get to see him duke it out with giant ants in the here and
now, and that too while having his ‘team’ quibbling about what
got the bugs so big in the first place. Still, it is neither the
Japanese nor the bugs that have the most impact. That
thing/aspect of the story (and of Robo) is much more human. As
for the art, it is as lively as the story and hits the same
humor, action and other notes too.
Conclusion: The two issues aren’t particularly
related and even though it might not make for depth of plot it
does make the series very approachable (for new readers). Also,
when each individual story is so fun who cares about anything
else.
