BLUE BEETLE #25 (DC): I don’t know what attraction/force DC used to get
writer John Rogers to leave this title but his leaving is a loss that is (most
probably) going to be death knoll for this series. This issue’s all-out
no-holds-barred showdown between Jaime and the Reach is just another example of
why I feel this way. (4.5/5)
HACK-SLASH #10 (Devil’s Due): The darkest issue of the series yet, this one
is also the one that tugs at your heart strings the most (or at least it should
give it a strong try). Cassie is still on the search for her dad when she meets
the ‘victims’ of yet another revenant-based experiment. As Cassie (and the
reader) learns the victims aren’t how/what they’d expect. (4/5)
JUNGLE GIRL #5 (Dynamite): This series started off strong but somewhere
around the end of issue #3 it started to drag and go down, and the finale
continues on with the same downslide. Of all the people who crashed into Jana’s
world only one survives. Not to worry for the ending has yet another newcomer
falling down from the sky, literally. Even the art felt rushed and unfinished.
(2.5/5)
NECESSARY EVIL #1 (Desperado): Even though this one came a while back, I
just read it now. Nice premise and development, except for the seeds of
sibling-rivalry at the end. Wouldn’t mind giving this a go. Nice artwork too.
(4/5)
OMEGA ONE #1 (Big City): A spinoff of Ant, Omega One takes
characters introduced in the second volume (Image) of Ant and
turns them into a team. Yup, even ColdBurn. However, this isn’t your usual
super-powered team, it’s a super-powered bunch of gophers/workers for the MAN
(as in government – pulic, shadow or otherwise). This introductory issue sets
them up and does so quite well, giving each character an individual voice, one
that is instantly recognizable from writer Jeff Kaufman’s run on Ant. The
art left me kinda indifferent. May it’ll grow on me. Oh, and Shi guest stars.
(3.5/5, almost 4)
OMEGA ONE #2 (Big City): The hits keep on coming as the three teams make way
towards their intended target. Good fights, some nice (if a bit clichéd)
dialogue and a new addition, make this a good enough time-pass read. (3.5/5)
RAMAYAN 3392 AD RELOADED #5 (Virgin): Oi! What’s with the fast forwarding?
Given the nice development of the previous series/volume, this run of R3392AD
has felt rushed and haphazard. This issue is just another display of the same, I
mean come on, Ravan’s already got/captured Sita??!! Poor showing. (2.5/5)
RED SONJA #31 (Dynamite): This month its Christos Gage and as much as I
enjoy his work as a writer this one came across as kind of weak. What could have
been a really good love lost story fizzled out thanks to a cop-out, both on part
of Sonja and the writer. Art wise too this one felt a step down from last month.
(3/5)
ROBIN #172 (DC): Thanks to Chuck Dixon Robin seems to well on its way
to its glorious hey days. From Maxie Zeus to the bombshell of an ending, this
series (as with Nightwing) has gone from being near the bottom of my pile
to amongst the top. As for the ending, it just calls out (for) Spoiler,
literally. (4/5)
