BATMAN: THE BRAVE AND THE BOLD #3 (DC): As “light” as the
previous two issues were (and as much as the animated series is), this issue
took the camp factor to a whole new level. And while I get that this series (as
also the cartoon) is aimed at a younger audience) the Super Friends, the
cartoon not the Johnny DC series of the same name, throwback didn’t quite work
for me. Do the creators of this series (and the cartoon) really think that they
can’t make a series that along with be for the younger crowd can still be a
little less goofy? It has been done before, just see the Teen Titans cartoon and
the Teen Titans Go! comic series. The back-up character bios (from the
Bat-cave files) was the best thing about this issue.

CARS: THE ROOKIE #1 (Boom! Kids): Man, wotta way to screw
up a perfectly good story/movie?! Even though I didn’t pick up last week’s
Muppet Show #1 I did get The Incredibles #1 (which was fairly above
average) and if this is any indication of things to come Boom! Studios’
newest venture is off to a faltering start. Cars: The Rookie is nowhere
near The Incredibles comic let alone the movies that inspired both
series. This mini is in serious need of more characters because (pre-movie)
Lightning McQueen is one major too-into-himself loser.

FRANKLIN RICHARDS: APRIL FOOLS No. 1 (Marvel): My first
buy of the Franklin Richards’ comics I didn’t quite NOT like this comic. It had
some good bits, especially seeing puppy Lockjaw. However, given its pricing (one
of the reasons why I passed on the previous FR special), I am not ready to
commit to getting a kiddy tale for $4+ Cdn. It was okay for a one-time try…not
bad not very impressive either.

INCREDIBLES: FAMILY MATTERS #1 (Boom! Kids): Ah, The
Incredibles, the first family of Disney-Pixar Animated superheroes. How long
have you taken to make the trip from the big screen to the print media?! Why so
long? And yeah, I recall the comic version of the movie but that doesn’t count.
As the first (true) take-off from the movie this series has some pretty big
shoes to fill, and while it doesn’t quite fit properly it seems that it just
might do that. The family dynamic is there, so are the humor and hi-jinks, even
though it all seems quite not as dynamic, as fluid as in the movie. Then again
given how fast paced the movie was this (feeling) was bound to popup. Still, it
does have promising start.
