Well, that was…hmm, it wasn’t exactly what I was looking for,
not towards the end anyways. While with the start, this fifth and final issue of
Bite Club: Vampire Crime Unit (sequel to the six parter ‘Bite Club’), got along
in pretty much the same vein (pardon the pun) as all the other issues before it,
the ending came across as rather…anticlimactic, at least to me.
For those who haven’t been along the Bite Club ride, the previous BC mini was an
out and out story about Risa Del Toro and while so was this one, here another
character had an almost equal time in the limelight, and even more so towards
the end. That character is detective Macavoy, who about three quarters through
this issue tenders in his resignation thus making him a former-detective.
With the events of the previous issue tying up almost every plot thread, except
the one that maybe started it all (this time around), that of the murder of a
prostitute. That the murder victim just happened to the daughter of a judge, one
who had rather close links to the Del Toro family was what the investigator i.e.
Fortine was using in his two-pronged attack on Risa, her business and family.
The second point of attack was Carrie (Risa’a live-in lover). As for Carrie, her
fate was sealed the second she got involved with Fortine and started double
crossing Risa to try to save her own hide. The shot to the head and falling down
from the skyscraper’s roof, only to fall on the hood of a truck that then
barreled into another parked vehicle, well that’s just the physical
manifestation of the final nail being hammered into the proverbial coffin.
Conclusion: Don’t know when and whether there will be a next Bite
Club story (mini or otherwise), but the way the Macavoy character was given a
send off, I’d much rather that he not be brought back. Not as strong an ending
as the previous mini. RATING: 7.5/10
