Huh?! That pretty much was what my first reaction was after I
finished the last panel of this issue, the 9th and last chapter in
the Captain Atom’s crossover into the Wildstorm universe. It took a second read
and a bit if head scratching to get some understanding of the end. And what did
I come away with?
Well, for one, the Wilstorm’s universe’s ‘Armageddon’ got the beat on its elder
sibling DC’s ‘Crisis’. Not in expanse i.e. sheer size and characters/people
affected, (not even Marvel’s Civil War comes close to that) but in the ‘brutal’
department. Super-Punch-Boy Prime and his knocking heads off got nothing on
Captain Atom’s ‘reluctant’ universe destroyer incarnation.
Captured by Apollo and Midnighter of the Authority (last issue), Cap is brought
to their carrier stronghold, where he scheduled to killed. Nothing personal,
they just want to save their universe and of course themselves. Alas, it things
were really that easy. The next few pages give a great (abridged) glimpse at the
members of the Authority and how they face what gets unleashed by their actions.
Its only towards the end that things get a bit confusing….the pace also trailing
off a bit.
The Wildstorm (Worldstorm?) gets a new beginning, (not too sure how ‘new’ is
that) and Ol’Cappy gets sent over to (hope you read IC #7) back to DC’s ‘new’
Earth, although at first look it wouldn’t appear that way. The reason I felt
that way (others might not) is that I haven’t been following the ‘Crisis
Aftermath: Battle for Bludhaven’ mini. (I dropped it after the first issue…and a
half).
Don’t know what’s in store for CA now, will try to keep a track of him. What I
am more interested in is the ‘new/rejuvenated/whatever’ Wildstorm.
And oh, Cap gets his old duds back. (Also already seen in IC #7)
Conclusion: I’ll always remember this mini for the
one that got me hooked onto the Wildstorm universe.
