Once again, I have read and am reviewing, in one sitting, three
issues of an ongoing-turned-mini, and that too a Wildstorm one. The
previous/first one was Skye Runner. While in that case it was the first three
issues, this time around it is numbers three, four and five.
Picking up from the last page of #2, this issue starts (and even ends) with a
fight. The opener is an expected one, one played out in a rather interesting
manner. Arness’s savior and (eventually) new companion, the beautiful and
vivacious Evy, brings in not only her exceptional fighting skills, but also a
sword. Not your run of the mill sword, this weapon is, well, mystical.
While the first half of the issue is setting up the new duo, the second half is
for getting Arness a snappy blade of his own. Along the way, not only do the two
get to know each other, they do so with fluidity that is as impressive as it is
refreshing (to read), right up to the fight with the Medusa, the one that gets
Arness his ‘red’ blade. Although not revealed here, it is clear that this sword
is also going to bring some surprises.
The artwork is as excellent as ever. (It maybe just me but) the detailed
pencils, tight inks and bright, full colors go a long way in making this read
a…as I said a refreshing experience. Conclusion:
I have enjoyed every single issue of Rokkin and am sad (and miffed) at DC’s
cancelling it after #6, i.e. turning it into a mini. RATING:
8/10
