It is interesting to see that as with its ‘fanstasy’ siblings,
this ongoing-turned-mini too ends in a way while tying up the current plotline
makes/leaves an opening for yet another story with the main character(s). Claw,
The Unconquered had one such ending and even though Rokkin too has its share of
sorrow and loss (from war), unlike Claw, this series ends on a much brighter
note.
At its core, Rokkin is/was a very straightforward story that of man who has
everything taken from him and his journey towards revenge. In accordance, this
last issue has the final showdown between the hero, Arness and the villain, Lord
Vulmax. However, along with this, there is also the subplot of Evy’s (Arness’s
companion and lover) ‘gone wrong’ copy/dupe. Tying it all is the startling
revelation from the last page of the previous issue. This reveal sets the stage
for Arness’s future adventures and a possible sequel to this mini. Had this
continued as an ongoing, it would have been the ending of one arc...lead to the
other. I guess the operative phrase is, 'Had it continued as an ongoing...'.
On the art front, well, there isn’t much left for me to say that I haven’t
written in my reviews of the first five issues. Then again, as it the closer, I
would like to say that I hope to see more of penciller Nick Bradshaw and
inker/colorist Jim Charalampidis soon, if not on DC, at least on a Wildstorm
series. Conclusion: With Skye Runner too on its
last legs (one issue remaining), I for one will miss Wildstorm’s short lived
revival/foray into the ‘swords & sorcery’ genre. RATING:
8/10 (Almost 8.5)
