This review is ‘delayed’ because I just got the first two
issues of this title. Had picked up #3 on a lark and liked it so much that I
went back and got the res.
A new series, that is not what this is. ‘Skye Runner’ is also the first
‘full’ Wildstorm series that I have picked up the first issue of. In the past,
all the Wildstorm I’ve read have either been minis or ongoing series that I’ve
gotten somewhere after a sizeable part of the story has already been told. And
if this title goes anything like what this #1 issue was, I am going to stay with
it…for a long time.
‘Skye Runner’ is the story of Skye, a young woman (pencilled beautifully by Alé
Garza, inked by Richard Friend and colored by Jim Charalampidis). Living in her
village ‘kingdom’, she along with her sister and her (the sister’s) children,
Skye wants above all, one thing. To be a knight. The only problem. She’s female
as in not a man, and hence she can’t be a knight…as her father was. What she can
be is a warrior, or in her case, a Runner, hence the name of the title.
This introductory issue, not only introduces us to Skye, it also gives us a
glimpse of her family, her aspirations and those with whom she has grown up. It
shows how even though the other women/girls tease her about her warrior (read:
skimpy) attire, they realize that she is not like the rest of them…she is
better. And maybe that’s why they do what they do.
But what defines the issue and leads towards the next one is the last quarter,
for it is here that Skye starts (albeit forcibly) on the journey that I suppose
is going is going to be mainstay of this series.
Conclusion: Fast paced story and a cartoony yet appealing artwork. Both
work for an encouraging start to what I hope will be a great series. RATING:
8.5/10 (Almost 9)
