Continuing my ‘marathon’ reading and reviewing of all three
issues of Skye Runner (out so far), I have to say, as with any TPB, even with
monthlies (or bimonthlies) it’s a hoot to read them in one go. There is no
waiting for the next issue to come out and with the style (writing and art) of
this series, its almost as if I am watching an animated series.
Anyways, this issue though not as ‘light’ as the previous one (at least in the
first half) is just as engrossing and fast paced. Beginning with where the last
panel of the previous issue led to, we see Skye as a prisoner of the wizard,
Aedimus Redd. The wizard, tells her what has happened to her, explaining how her
peaceful life was shattered in all but an instant. After that, as per his
promise, he frees her, only to have his nose broken by a head butt.
After a couple of mishaps, first the ‘nose’ one and a second involving
‘hallucination’ causing mists, the duo set out for their first adventure. On the
way, they meet some rather interesting characters, including the purple unicorn
from the first issue.
The adventure or quest rather leads them onto and then under water where they
battle some rather ‘wormy-eely’ creatures, all for something the wizard
requires. His cauldron. Now this not the same cauldron as in the vein of Asterix
and Obelix, but rather a hotspot of mystical energy, one that Aedimus had to
give up to the gods (narrated in both this issue and the first).
Parting ways with the ‘repowered’ old man, Skye starts on the next leg of her
journey, following the feet…or hooves rather of her new companion Fate (the
unicorn), only to stop as she comes upon some rather strange statues…including
one of herself. Conclusion: I am enjoying this ride
very much for Skye has an feisty innocence that none of the other female warrior
characters like Zena, Red Sonja have. RATING: 8.5/10
