And this, child, is a lesson in making (near) free money.
Starting with a cover with *well developed/endowed* characters, especially the
fair female kind, plunk in a couple of previews, a few pin-up ads and oh,
do remember to keep the biggest breasts in the Wildstorm universe (not to
mentioned a pair of the newest ones) in the foreground with a literal, ‘in your
face’ presence. Do that, plaster a four dollars an issue charge (for them
Canucks), and voila, free money with a capital M, not to mention a big-honking F
(for F**K You) to the unsuspecting idiot naïve enough to actually put down the
money for it.
If that introductory passage seemed a tad too crass to you, how about this,
counting the front and the back/message from Jim Lee, there are twelve
glorified-ad pages in this read of twenty-four. From Tranquility to Stormwatch
P.H.D., all get (at least) a page of showing off, leaving an equal number i.e.
twelve pages to preview the above two mentioned titles.
It is clear that this 1-shot special is/was meant to launch the new Wildstorm
Universe, lead the charge if you will. Taken that way it works…sorry, would
have worked, had it not been so delayed that not only did it come out in the
same week as a title it was supposed to announce (Gen13) but also after one of
them had already started (Wetworks). Its like DC (Wildstorm’s Parent Company)
started with any of the Infinite Crisis Prelude tie-in minis (OMAC Projkect, DoV,
VU, R/T War) and then came out with the Preview 1-shot special for them.
Conclusion: Except for the art, especially Ms. Fairchild and her
assets (which had their ‘covering’ change from the green of preview art to plain
white), I cannot think of a single reason as to why I’d suggest this 1-shot to
anyone. RATING:
6.5/10 (Good Eye Candy, inside and out)
