Mysterius: The Unfathomable #1
Reviewed by: Bruce Logan

Starting with the story, it is narrated by Delfi (yeah, no "ph"), the current/newest assistant to the, uh, mysterious Mysterius. The issue is mainly Delfi a.k.a. Ella telling the story of she first came across her (now) boss...and subsequently came to work for him. As it happens, even tho' their meeting was coincidental Ella/Delfi possesses certain ‘abilities’ (as did all her predecessors) that help Mysterius do his job better.

As for Mysterius himself, although the character (and the issue overall) is its share of humour, there is a secretive darkness lurking in the background. In addition, as seen on more than one occasion Mysterius isn't any do-gooder/hero/good-samaritan. He (might) be doing (part of) what he does for helping people, he does so for the right price.

The artwork is in keeping with the overall tone of the writing, with the right amounts of comedy, flair and scares. Lastly, while the colours in the scary/hell scenes could have been (slightly?) darker/grittier IMO it would have disrupted the flow of the story.

Even though it didn’t quite blow me away, Mysterius: The Fathomable #1 impressed me more than enough to get it in my usual ‘three issue (or first arc, whichever comes later)’ list.

RATING: 7.5/10
