A title about the ‘Men in Black for Supers’, only without the
whole ‘(semi-)funny’ angle, that is what I got from this first issue of this new
series from Wildstorm Productions. Now, lets make one thing clear, this is one
amazing piece of writing, helped with slightly gaudy but oddly appropriate
artwork. Why say that beforehand? Because, along with being so good, it is also
going to be limited to a specific comic reading demographic, and not only by the
‘Suggested for Mature Readers’ disclaimer on the cover. Not many readers are
into this style/genre…whatever genre this falls under.
It’s a story of the shady underground of the Superhero world, one complete with
its own President ‘Dakota Bob’ (guess who that dig is for?) Acting as an
introductory setup issue, we get a glimpse of how wrong things are and the guys
who are going to set them right. Do mind that this ‘right’ might not be morally
right, but the right coming from the mind of a person (and/or group of people)
who might have a little less than outright hatred for the costume types…or many
a case, a lot more.
Also present as always is the shadow of the government and its
‘one-hand-take-one-hand-stab-in-the-back’ ways. This government isn’t that of
their DC counterparts (who are even now, slightly idealistic) or even that of
the other ‘House’ (who are a little too trippy to jump to action, more than
often without thinking the matter through). These people are much more…well,
that their bureaucrats call the President ‘A man of total moral integrity’,
right after a session of angry-passion with a person other than their spouse,
the second parent of their children, it just makes it all the more realistic,
not to mention ‘oozing with sarcasm’ funny.
However, returning to my own little disclaimer from the beginning, this isn’t a
title for everyone...including me. Still, I might (a very big ‘might’) give it a
couple of more issues, just to see if I warm up to it, after all, I did give
Checkmate a while arc (4 issues) before finally putting it down.
Conclusion: Its all about your personal tastes. As for me, I’d
much rather see this in movie format than read it. But one thing I think
everyone will agree on…that dog is one UGLY mo-fo. RATING:
8.5/10 (Almost 9)
