Of all Wildstorm’s Post-Armageddon series out so far,
Wetworks is the one that gets the dubious title of being the most
newbie-unfriendly title. Neither the other two team-titles (The Authority,
WildCATs, and yes, even Gen13) nor the singles (Deathblow, Midnighter) are as
hard to comprehend (for a new reader) as this Wetworks is. After last month’s
opener, I almost did not pick up this one. Still, going in with my usual
‘Trial of Three’, I am sticking it out for the said three issues. In the
mean time, I have tried to get some knowledge about his title/team (meaning,
three back issues, one Vampirella crossover and some ‘net searching). As a
result, unlike the drowning in stormy seas read that was issue #1, #2
comes across a…well, capsizing in a lake. In short, an improvement.
As for the story, it is still a bit confusing. Starting with the Colonel
stepping in and then taking into custody the werewolf police officer that was
arresting Red (the Vampire) last issue, the story sees Colonel questioning the
said officer, and coming up with a few truths and much confusion and/or lying.
On the other side, a mysterious bad-guy (well, he was a mystery to me and it may
not be the case with veteran Wetworkers i.e. Wetworks readers) is shown,
first killing a para-glider and then kill off a couple (in San Francisco), all
to set off a false alarm and to divert attention from his true intentions. When
the Colonel and party (i.e. Red and Ab-Death) arrive at the scene, they get into
a fight with a failsafe/trap that said bad-guy had left behind him.
In addition, Mother One, the Cyborg, finally wakes up.
Conclusion: Art is still sketchy and story is a bit screwy (though that I
guess is more from me being a new reader), and although I still will most
probably (as of now) end up letting go of this title, #2 does improve over #1.
