On its second of four issues this arc traces its origin back to
the previous one (the three-issue opening arc for the series) and in that way
anyone coming into this title with this storyline might feel a bit left out.
This holds true for plotlines i.e. the Vampire one as also the one involving the
Soul Eater.
In this issue while Colonel Dane and Co. make the move to get the original
Wetworks team back together and in the later pages pay a visit to the stronghold
of the Vampire Nation, Ab-Death and Persephone the vampire set off into
Deadworld tracking whatever it is that Ab saw a few issue back. Both plotlines
end this issue with a betrayal for the heroes with Dane going up against the
recently ‘mutated’ vampires (by Vascar’s bite) and Ab and Persephone coming face
to face with the Soul Eater entity.
There is a change in the art-department with the team of Whilce Portacio and
Richard Friend bowing out making way for Peter Gross and Darick Robertson.
Similarly on the colors Wildstorm FX replaces Wendy Broome. Even though a new
team means change in the character stylings and looks overall the ambience
remains quite similar to the one established by the previous artists, which
means it is still to dark for my tastes. What makes the black expanses even more
putting off are the panels which are don’t without the overwhelming blackness
taking over everything.
Conclusion: Apart from the overabundance of black inking in the
art there isn’t much that is wrong with this title. Then again, there isn’t much
that is all that right either…and there in lies its problem.
